CoinDCX Co-founder partners with ISRO Scientists to launch astrobase, Raises $7Mn

CoinDCX, Neeraj Khandelwal, co-founder, has joined hands with senior scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to launch Astrobase, a Bengaluru-based spacetech startup. The founding team includes ISRO veterans Devakumar Thammisetty, Pawan Kumar, and Prashant M, bringing deep aerospace expertise to the table.

🚀 What is Astrobase?

Astrobase is working to build high-payload, cost-efficient satellite launch vehicles tailored for the new space economy. The startup is:

  • Developing a methane-oxygen full-flow staged combustion engine

  • Targeting payload capacity of 3 to 10 tonnes

  • Planning three types of launch vehicle configurations:

    • Fully expendable

    • Partially reusable

    • Fully reusable

  • Aiming for $300 per kg launch cost by 2034

💰 Astrobase Funding Round Highlights

Astrobase has raised a $7 million seed round to power its growth:

  • Initial filings showed Rs 60 crore ($7 million) raised, led by BanyanCo, a venture firm.

  • The startup is currently valued at Rs 623 crore (~$72 million).

  • Co-founder Khandelwal later confirmed a $7 million total seed round.

  • Plans are underway to raise additional capital soon.

🏭 Engine Facility & Production Milestone

Astrobase has already moved from R&D to manufacturing:

  • Secured an engine manufacturing facility in Bengaluru’s aerospace hub

  • Facility is now fully operational

  • Working with 10 senior ISRO scientists

  • Completed designs for an orbital-class launch system

This rapid progress positions Astrobase to be a serious player in India’s commercial satellite launch ecosystem.

📈 Rise of Indian Spacetech Startups

Astrobase is entering a sector witnessing rapid momentum:

  • In 2024, 13 Indian spacetech startups raised over $85 million

  • In 2025 (so far), 10 startups have already secured more than $15 million

  • Backed by strong investor interest and government support

🇮🇳 Government Support for Spacetech

To further boost innovation and reduce import dependence, the Indian government introduced major funding programs in 2025:

  • Rs 500 crore ($58 million) fund launched via IN-SPACe

  • Rs 1,000 crore ($116 million) VC fund approved for space-tech startups

  • Aimed at promoting domestic R&D, private participation, and local production

🌌Why Astrobase Matters

Astrobase isn’t just another startup. It represents the convergence of India’s new-age entrepreneurial energy with legacy scientific expertise. By focusing on reusability, cost-efficiency, and domestic production, Astrobase could become a foundational force in making India a global satellite launch hub.
